It is also home to the 366th Fighter wing which provides combat power and support capabilities to respond to contingency situations worldwide. Mountain Home Air Force Base also served as an alternative landing site for NASA’s Space Shuttle. The base is located about 40 miles from Boise, Idaho. There are over 1,500 housing units at Mountain Home Air Force Base. Military personnel are asked to check in at the housing office and fill out a DD Form 1746 to apply for on-post housing. The housing office also maintains a list of off-post housing and can help determine the basic allowance for housing that will cover most rent and some utilities depending on the residence selected.
